Excise Tax is an indirect tax levied on specific goods that are typically harmful to health or the environment, such as tobacco, alcohol, energy drinks, carbonated drinks, and pork products. Our team ensures accurate registration, reporting, and compliance, reducing your tax risks while optimizing operational efficiency.

What is Excise Tax?

Excise Tax is applied on goods that fall under the GCC Common Excise Tax Agreement, aimed at reducing consumption of harmful products and generating government revenue for public services.

In Oman, the Excise Tax Law (Royal Decree 23/2019) outlines the products subject to excise tax and their respective rates:

Product Category Excise Tax Rate
Tobacco Products 100%
Pork Products 100%
Alcoholic Beverages 100% (temporarily reduced to 50% for six months)
Energy Drinks 100%
Carbonated Drinks 50%

The tax is calculated on the higher of the standard price set by the SGT or the declared retail sales price.

Who Must Register for Excise Tax?

All persons producing, importing, or holding excisable goods in Oman are required to register for Excise Tax, except for individuals importing goods irregularly. Registration ensures timely submission of Excise Tax returns and payment to the government.

When is Excise Tax Payable?

Excise Tax is payable:

  • On the date of import of excisable goods
  • When goods are released for consumption
  • When goods are offered for personal consumption within free zones or special economic zones

Businesses must maintain proper documentation and report via the SGT electronic system for registration, tax returns, and payment.
